Synth Workshop with CuryJ!

Thingamajigs partnered with CuryJ’s Homies 4 Justice program to put on a one off synth building workshop in their community garden. Homies got to build a working synthesizer from scratch that they are able to play with and take home with them.

Cury J’s Homies 4 Justice program is a paid internship for systems-impacted youth who are interested in becoming leaders in their community.

Kirk Pearson, founder of Dogbotic, led our workshop on June 14th, 2022 in Oakland California.

It’s kinda incredible how immediately doable it is. I think building something as simple as an oscillator is a great reminder that no technology is magic, and everything is very attainable.
— Kirk Pearson, Workshop instructor
I’m so excited for our young people to be exposed to different things... different varieties of careers... hobbies!
— Cristina Flores, Homies 4 Justice Program Coordinator

Putting little things together into a masterpiece [was fun]!
— Homies 4 Justice workshop participant

This was definitely a healing experience, as I saw our youngsters... release that inner child in them and have fun and make jokes and make the beats.
— Cristina Flores, Homies 4 Justice Program Coordinator

Thingamajigs is hoping to make more workshops like these a one year project with CuryJ and other groups that work with system impacted youth. If you are interested in joining us, please email Erica at erica@thingamajigs.org

Workshop was made possible with funds from California Arts Council Jump StART planning grant.
