Synth-in-Place: Beginner Synthesizer Building for the Quarantined Teen Session 3

Have you ever wanted to build an electronic musical instrument, but social distancing got in the way? Synth-in-Place is a five-day crash course all about making electronic music from scratch. In a series of small group workshops, we'll be building our own synthesizers out of simple, inexpensive components we ship to your house. No experience is necessary, so don't worry if you don't know your transistors from resistors. Together, we'll learn how electricity can make sound, how we can make those sounds musical, and how to design them into our own one-of-a-kind electronic thingamajigs.

Experimental Instruments Materials :: Thingamakids! in Camp 510

In this week long exploration we encounter a dozen styles of instruments all created from one very useful and prevalent landscaping plant: Bamboo. From ancient times, humans living with bamboo have used it for food, shelter and to build entire orchestras of diverse and melodic sounds, strange and haunting harmonies and versatile percussion instruments. We will make bull roarers, xylophones, rasps, plosive percussion tubes and simple string zithers. We will also learn about text scores, how to write and perform them, and collaboratively compose a short work for performance on our final day, using the RSVP process pioneered by legendary dancer Anna Halprin.

Teaching Artist : David Samas

Grades : 1 - 5 (6 to 10 year olds)

Music and Art :: Thingamakids! in Camp 510

Music and Art CAMPers get to explore methods of art making, music making, and the world where they overlap. Students will use music as their inspiration in two-dimensional medium, and will use art techniques in order to produce something that ends up musical. This involves creating in response to music; through collage, painting and drawing as result of movement and emotion.  In turn, we will write and move to music to create art, and even produce a sculpture that makes music!

Teaching Artist : Taylor Gersbach

Grades : 1 - 5 (6 to 10 year olds)

Life Drummer: Active Listener :: Thingamakids! in Camp 510

Students will create simple percussion instruments out of everyday items, learn about inviting objects to make a sound with different implements and strokes, and explore what the camp is made of by essentially "thumping and whacking on it." Students will also learn to listen to their environment in a musical way and develop a practice of active listening for all situations, ordinary and musical.

SINGfinity :: Thingamakids! in Camp 510

Teaching Artist Rae Diamond guides kids to explore the infinity of sound that they can create, using only breath and voice. In this week-long Thingamakids workshop, kids will create their very own sound scores, like a six-sided dice score that we’ll roll to determine which sounds to make next, or a deck of cards score that we’ll use to create different sound games with, …and more!
